Protected: Making Tax DigitalAn introduction to Making Tax Digital for VAT Tax affairs management is changing for the UK’s businesses, accountants and bookkeepers and the deadline is fast-approaching. Making Tax Digital (MTD) is an HMRC initiative designed to make sure the UK tax system more effective, efficient and easier for taxpayers. It is a good idea to be prepared so that you are ready before the deadline. What do HMRC’s updates mean for you? From 1 April 2019 VAT-registered businesses above the threshold of £85k will have to keep digital records and submit VAT returns using compatible cloud accounting software. HMRC lists Xero as software that will be compatible with MTD for VAT which is the software we use at Indigo Green. If you are below the threshold you won’t be immediately impacted but this is a great opportunity to switch to online accounting. You will not need to use Government Gateway anymore as your new cloud-based software will do this for you. For a more in-depth understanding, read this article about Making Tax Digital for VAT by Sage. When does all this happen? Use this neat timeline created by Xero to be in the know. So how do you go about changing over? Utilise this Making Tax Digital checklist to aid your preparations and keep on top of everything. Check out this handy infographic guide to making tax digital made by Sage, which should also help you on your way. 12 Apps of Christmas12 Apps of Christmas. In a twist on the traditional 12 Days of Christmas, over the next 12 days we’re going to share 12 great apps that you can use within your business. All of these apps link into Xero, maximising their value. We actually use 7 out of the 12 apps within Indigo Green, so we speak from experience! Day 1 – GoCardless (www.gocardless.com) GoCardless is an amazing payments service. Get your clients to sign up to pay you via Direct Debit. Whenever you create an invoice for a client that is signed up to pay via DD the payment will automatically be called on the due date that you put on the invoice. You also have the option of setting up a monthly recurring payment, which isn’t linked to an invoice. Fees on GC are capped at 1% of the payment amount, up to a maximum of £2 per transaction. Payout times are generally 2 days. Day 2 – TripCatcher (www.tripcatcherapp.com) TripCatcher takes the headache out of mileage claims. Whilst there are other apps that deal with employee expenses (one of which features in our 12 Apps…) TripCatcher looks after those pesky mileage expenses. Use the GPS feature to track where you go, save favourite journeys to add again with a couple of taps, and then export over to Xero at the end of the month to an expense claim. One of the 2 best bits – tell TC what car you drive, and it’ll work out the VAT element you can reclaim so you don’t have to constantly check the advisory rates, or worse still just don’t... read more
